Growing an Educational Farm

Can you feel that? Spring is here! And even though winter didn't do too much damage on the city this year, we've never been more excited for spring. That moment when the first lettuces of the season appear and we can trade in our roasted sweet potatoes for asparagus and rhubarb. It's a wonderful time for us Slow Food-ies.

Slow Food New York City believes that everyone, every day, has a right to good, clean and fair food. We bring these values to our Urban Harvest educational programs — and if you want the nitty gritty on how we do it,take a look here.

As we welcome spring, we're thinking ahead to our summer program, Urban Harvest at Ujima, our educational farm in East New York where community children engage — tuition-free — in planting, tending, harvesting, preparing, and enjoying great tasting, nutritious food. Last year, many of the program's students told us that this was their first time preparing food and tasting new fruits and vegetables. That's 128 children planting 60 varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers, harvesting 150 pounds of produce and preparing 25 lunches and snacks daily for themselves and fellow students.

We have high hopes for this summer's program and need your help to make it a reality. Think back to when you were young and you first learned how to cook, cut, or grow a single item. You were probably beaming with pride in this small yet special accomplishment. With this moment in mind, consider supporting the Urban Harvest at Ujima crowdfunding campaign to EXPAND and IMPROVE the educational experiences we can provide at the farm. Every gift, $1 or $1,000, will make a difference!
